I learned most of these guidelines by trial and error (more notably error) and I wanted to provide these friendly tips to those seeking existence's greatest answers.
1) sleep every night
-if you want to keep the fine balance necessary to walk this path, you NEED sleep. It is extremely dangerous to push beyond this limit in obsessive pursuit of knowledge, no matter how pure your intentions are.
2) get grounded
-after an extensive period of dwelling in the astral or ruminating on philosophical questions, it can be hard to connect to mundane and ordinary life, which can seem trivial. Make sure to force yourself to come back to the trivial - whether that means spending time with a friend, sitting in nature, or even just indulging in a hobby for fun. If you don't ground yourself from time to time, the sustained intensity of spiritual pursuit can inhibit or even break your connection to the "ordinary" world
3) switch your focus
If you spend too much time researching or thinking about one subject, you can sometimes become too inundated with the topic in isolation that you can't see it's greater meaning anymore, and you may find yourself stuck without insight. What can be helpful here is to diverge - start reading about history instead of philosophy, drop an occult book for one on biology. The true flame of illumination is noticing how everything fits together, and if you are only focused on looking at one perspective, you may not grasp the deeper implications that lead to breakthroughs.
4) don't just say whatever to whomever anytime
Rather, wait for the RIGHT time, to say the RIGHT thing, to the RIGHT person. Similar to "to know, to dare, and to be silent. Intuition is the best asset in cultivating these cues.
You need to understand many people are not on a seeker's wavelength. Not only might you make them uncomfortable, but reality itself will intervene so that the significance of what you say will never register in the minds of those who aren't ready. Learning to see the signs of an "awakening" or "awakened" person is crucial. Choose what you say carefully depending on this persons level of spiritual and philosophical progression. And choose the right time - "you'll know when"
5) be willing to look at both sides of everything
Sometimes we may learn or experience things that reveal the truth to us so profoundly that we cannot have any doubt. Nonetheless, practice having dialogues with an inner devil's advocate, so that you can flesh out your comprehension on different perspectives and more directly understand yourself and others. It's okay to form a tentative judgement about what you currently think is true, but leave it malleable, and always consider alternatatives. A good picture includes shading. A good story requires full-dimensional characters. And the seeker requires the vision to see two sides - and then see BEYOND both.
6) notice signs and synchronicity, but don't recklessly assume their meaning
Every seeker has some experience with synchronicity as coined by Carl Jung. As you begin unearthing your soul, the external world will begin to reflect your inner states of mind by aligning meaningfully with your thoughts and experiences. Remember that this is your own brain doimg this - you are in the process of revealing you to yourself. Fundementally however, without an extremely discerning mind which can straddle the razor-thin line between the astral and the material, the signs can become psychosis, and their meaning divorced from reality, especially in the case of paranoia. To best ensure you will be able to maintain this balance, all the other guidelines should be of great help.
7) do NOT dabble in things you don't fully understand
This is related to the practice of the esoteric art - particularly ritual magick. The doors that open portals to demonic worlds are doors in your mind. Meaning, if you let those things through without a proper understanding of them, you can infect your psyche with "viruses" that you might not ever be able to get rid of. Magick is imperfect and can be very corruptive to handle. Some go so far as to say that you ought not even EXPOSE yourself to such material about enochian magick or the goetia, etc - personally, I think a true seeker must be willing to learn whatever it is that they need to know. In exposing yourself to this material, maintain a level of emotional detachment. I am not saying to never engage in these practices, and oracles like the tarot and iching are harmless. Make sure, however, that you are fully aware in the process you are engaging in and your role as its instigator.
8) you are responsible for your thoughts and your attention
In the astral, a thought casts a ripple in the collective and individual ocean. These impressions create interference patterns and form broader egregores, memes, and archetypes, or modify existing ones. BY THINKING OF SOMETHING NEW, YOU HAVE MADE THE THOUGHT MORE ACCESSIBLE TO OTHERS. That is why many scientific breakthroughs are made by multiple individuals in the same period of history. An idea never dies. A thought is not something to be seen as "pure" or "impure", but rather as an energetic transaction. You give energy to whatever it is you focus on, whether internally or externally. If the thought is destructive or negative, it is not "wrong", but it is under your ownership, and you must stand with the integrity to acknowledge that. Learn to meta your mind, as thought patterns can be nearly impossible to "will" yourself out of. Music is a good way of manipulating thought and focus patterns.
