I'd say we hide because it provides cover, which in turn suggests safety. There is nothing wrong with being safe. Why do we feel the need to be safe in the first place though?
This is the place where nightmares become real.

It's also kind of liberating online to be free of your identity, even if it occasionally causes problems.

It's also kind of liberating online to be free of your identity, even if it occasionally causes problems. How can I be free of my identity? I am always me and even if there are a thousand aspects and roles within me, surfacing as it fits to the situation at hand at best, me will be me, unless my ego says goodbye and I turn into somatic goo or so. Everyone thinking being free of their identity has a split personality, a severe drug problem, or lies to themselves. Of course, this is just my opinion at this very moment.
