Reading list:
– mostly philosophical and social-moral argumentation: The Myth of Mental Illness by Tomas Szasz ( archive.org/details/szasz_myth , 50 years later review: www.szasz.com/Szasz50newpreface.pdf )
– A journalist’s exploration of psychiatric patient’s lives and clinical studies:
Robert Whitaker: www.madinamerica.com/author/rwhitaker/
More recent and complex revealing book on how mind, body and environment interplay in creating mental illness or wellness, putting mainstream medical and psychiatric establishment to shame:
Kelly Brogan, MD (‘A Mind of Your Own’): concen.org/node/37477
Reading her book right now, topics so far include following factors:
1. body’s microbiome
2. gut-brain connection
3. hormonal systems
4. (auto)immune systems
5. stress and environment
I.e. suggesting honest knowledge about disease processes, requires for prevention and healing a multimodal approach.
Medicine and psychiatry are dishonest for many reasons:
1. ignoring root causes
2. misdiagnosis
3. unsafe prescriptions (especially longer term use)
4. messing around with studies for academic results in their favor
5. ignoring the plethora of data and instances of worsening of symptoms, physical side effects and suicide/death after use of psychiatric medication
6. selling easy paradigms like 'it's just a chemical imbalance', one set of symptoms -> one diagnosis -> one class of psychiatric pills to prescribe: not evidence based! No valid testing of patients!
They are dangerous for:
1. creating a dependence on their prescriptions and ‘treatments’
2. having no real stake in the (long term) outcome
3. garnering power over individuals and society as authority figures on the human psyche, influencing law and social and medical policy
