What was his reasoning for doubting it could be a plasma beam? That makes perfect sense to me.

Scientists have that problem unfortunately. Close-mindedness is a terrible trait for a scientist. Some of the biggest breakthroughs have come from psuedo amateurs because the academic community becomes so insular and caught up in its own dogma that it cannot make a leap of intuition or innovate. I get that a scientist would be dismissive of an amateur but a good scientist entertains many ideas and dismisses them only after thought and consideration.
