 THE NEXT SOLAR WIND STREAM: Another stream of solar wind is approaching Earth. Estimated time of arrival: Nov. 22nd. The gaseous material is flowing from a sinuous hole in the sun's atmosphere, south of the heliographic equator. It is not expected to spark a full-fledged geomagnetic storm. However, polar auroras are likely when the solar wind arrives.

A RARE WAVE IN EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD: When a stream of solar wind hits Earth's magnetic field, magnetometers around the Arctic Circle normally go a bit haywire, with their needles swinging chaotically as the buffeting ensues. Rob Stammes of the Polarlightcenter, a magnetic observatory in Norway, sees such disordered behavior all the time. But on Nov. 18th something quite different happened. The solar wind produced a pure sine wave:

COMET PLUNGES INTO THE SUN: Subtract one from the Solar System's total count of comets. Yesterday a small unnamed comet dove into the sun and evaporated. Coronagrapbhs onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) recorded the death plunge: A subsequent movie shows the comet going in, but not coming out again. R.I.P.!
The doomed comet was a member of the Kreutz family. Kreutz sungrazers are fragments from the breakup of a single giant comet many centuries ago. They are seen falling into the sun dozens of times a year. This particular sungrazer measured a few tens of meters in diameter, too small to survive a close approach with the sun.
